Lucas Skjaret* (he/him) is a Queer stage director, producer, and educator. He focuses on storytelling which connects deep, into the roots of humanity, with the intention of amplifying all voices to ring clear both on and off stage.
As an arts producer, he has a wide range of experience behind the scenes. Lucas was an artistic intern at The Playwrights’ Center under Jeremy Cohen before becoming the Artistic Administrator for The Public Theater of Minnesota, where he helped to produce large, outdoor Shakespeare productions in connection with Three Rivers Parks District. He was also a literary consultant at SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development in addition to his producing work at Market Garden Theatre. Lucas has been a teaching artist at public schools as well as The Children’s Theatre Company, Young Artist Initiative, and SteppingStone Theater for Youth Development. He strives to connect empathic and rigorous pedagogy within all levels of artistic education and training. His creative scholarship involves the development of new work, global theatre practices, Theatre for Young Audiences, rural and community-rooted theatre, staging in non-traditional venues, and exploring the intersection of different artistic expressions with technology. Lucas has been published in the Texas Theatre Journal and the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal. He has presented at ATHE, MATC, SETC, HERC, and CDC. His academic scholarship focuses on exploring performance as identity, translation & adaptation theory, arts pedagogy, and Nordic dramatic literature. He has also presented his scholarship at professional and academic conferences. Lucas holds an M.F.A. in Directing from Baylor University. He also received his double B.A. in Theatre Arts and Scandinavian Studies from The University of North Dakota and studied at The University of Oslo, where he did research at The Ibsen Centre and collaborated with Teater Neuf. A proud Norwegian-American, he is deeply interested in the intersection between heritage and performance, as well as contemporary Nordic dramaturgy. Lucas is an alumnus of the Directors Lab North in Toronto, Canada and the Kennedy Center Directing Intensive. He has also studied actor pedagogy at The Stella Adler Studio in New York City as well as intimacy direction with Tonia Sina and Theatrical Intimacy Education.
