Lucas Skjaret (he/him) is a Queer stage director, producer, and educator. He focuses on storytelling which connects deep, into the roots of humanity, with the intention of amplifying all voices to ring clear both on and off stage.

Lucas is currently an M.F.A. Theatre Directing candidate at Baylor University, where he has directed Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker, Sam Shepard's 4-H Club, and Under the Compass Rose, a devised production based upon the painting of the same name.

During his undergraduate years, Lucas studied abroad twice in Norway, once at The International Summer School of Oslo and at The University of Oslo, where he did research at The Ibsen Centre and collaborated with Teater Neuf. A proud Norwegian-American, Lucas is deeply interested in the intersection between heritage and performance, as well as contemporary Nordic dramaturgy.

He has since studied intimacy direction with both Intimacy Directors & Coordinators and Theatre Intimacy Education. He also participated in the Kennedy Center Directing Intensive and Director's Lab North in Toronto, Canada. Lucas places great emphasis on radical collaboration in the rehearsal room along with a consent-based approach to artistic creation.

As an arts producer, he has a wide range of experience behind the scenes. Lucas was an artistic intern at The Playwrights’ Center under Jeremy Cohen before becoming the the Artistic Administrator for The Public Theater of Minnesota, where he helped to produce large, outdoor Shakespeare productions in connection with Three Rivers Parks District. He was also a literary consultant at SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development in addition to his producing work at Market Garden Theatre. The concept of taking an idea and then curating it into a fully-realized performative event is what excites him the most as an arts producer.

Lucas has been a teaching artist at public schools as well as The Children’s Theatre Company, Young Artist Initiative, and SteppingStone Theater for Youth Development. He strives to connect empathic and rigorous pedagogy within all levels of artistic education and training. Lucas is passionate in not just in teaching and developing artistic excellence, but also in the administration and coordination of training institutions.

His creative scholarship involves the development of new work, international scripts, Theatre for Young Audiences, rural and community-rooted theatre, staging in non-traditional venues, and exploring the intersection of different artistic expressions with technology.

Lucas has been published in Texas Theatre Journal and the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal. His academic scholarship focuses on exploring performance as identity, translation & adaptation theory, arts pedagogy, and Nordic dramatic literature. He has also presented his scholarship at professional and academic conferences.

Lucas is a proud associate member of The Society of Directors and Choreographers as well as a member of The Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. He holds additional memberships with the The Ibsen Society of America, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and The Mid-America Theatre Conference.
