Lucas Skjaret (he/him) is a queer stage director, producer, and educator based in Waco, Texas. He received a double B.A. in Theatre Arts and Scandinavian Studies from The University of North Dakota and is currently an M.F.A. Theatre Directing Candidate at Baylor University. During his undergraduate studies, Lucas studied abroad twice in Norway, once at The International Summer School of Oslo and at The University of Oslo, where he did research at The Ibsen Centre and collaborated with Teater Neuf. Lucas studied intimacy direction with both Intimacy Directors & Coordinators and Theatre Intimacy Education.
 
At Baylor University, he directed Circle Mirror Transformation. He has   also directed   a workshop production of Calvin Berger  with his fellow graduate cohort  along with selections from The Children's Hour and The Seagull. His writing has been published in Texas Theatre Journal and the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal. Lucas’  academic scholarship  focuses on exploring performance as identity, translation & adaptation theory, performance pedagogy, and Nordic dramatic literature.

Lucas founded Market Garden Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he has directed the regional premiere of award-winning   My Barking Dog   by Eric Coble,   Another Revolution  by Jacqueline Bircher,  On  The Exhale   (Minnesota Fringe Festival for “Top Fringe Production”), the world premiere of Public Exposure  by Keith Hovis, and  Three Days of Rain  as part of The Fledgling Project with Arts Nest, among others. Lucas also developed and directed a digital performance of The Retelling  by Alayna Jacqueline with music by Simon Sperl in partnership with The Twin Cities Horror Festival.

He has also directed workshops, showcases, and short plays with Little Life Boats/T.E.A.S.E, The Dead North Podcast, The Chameleon Theatre Circle, Oncoming Productions, Pillsbury House’s Chicago Avenue Arts Project, One Minute Play Festival, Box Wine Theatre, and others.
 
As an assistant or associate director, selected credits include: The Comedy of Errors (dir. Rebecca Bailey, North Dakota Shakespeare Festival), 12 Angry Jurors (dir. Sam Henderson, Baylor University),   Secret Garden   (dir. Lisa Channer, Artistry), Snow Queen    (dir. Doug Scholz-Carlson, Park Square Theatre),  La Cage Aux Folles  (dir. Joe Chvala, Artistry),  River Road Boogie: The Augie Garcia Story  (dir. Raúl Ramos, History Theatre),   Behind the Eye   (dir. Leah Cooper, Park Square Theatre), and   Gabriel  (dir. Amy Rummenie, Walking Shadow - Ivey Award for“Best Production”).

Lucas has been a teaching artist at public schools as well as The Children’s Theatre Company, Young Artist Initiative, and SteppingStone Theater for Youth Development. He was an artistic intern at The Playwrights’ Center under Jeremy Cohen, worked as the Artistic Administrator for The Public Theater of Minnesota, and did literary consulting at SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development in addition to his producing work at Market Garden Theatre.

​His creative scholarship involves the development of new work, international scripts, Theatre for Young Audiences, rural and community-rooted theatre, staging in non-traditional venues, and exploring the intersection of different artistic expressions with technology.

Lucas is a proud associate member of The Society of Directors and Choreographers as well as a member of The Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. He holds additional memberships with the The Ibsen Society of America, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and The Mid-America Theatre Conference. Lastly, Lucas is an alum of The Directors Lab North in Toronto, Canada.
